Intrauterine Insemination (IUI).

Intrauterine insemination, also known as IUI, is one of the most straightforward fertility treatments and is often the first stage in treating unexplained fertility, before moving on to other more invasive options such as in vitro fertilisation.

IUI encourages conception by selecting the highest quality sperm. The motile sperm is separated from the immotile through sperm preparation techniques in the laboratory. During the insemination stage, the sperm is placed into the top uterus where it can fertilise the eggs.

For some women, fertilisation can be further encouraged by using fertility drugs. Fertility drugs that stimulate the number of eggs produced can increase the chances of success. Ultrasound scans are then performed to monitor the development of the follicles and, at the right time, an injection of hCG-Human Chorionic Gonadotropin triggers ovulation.

IUI can be performed either alone or in conjunction with Timed Intercourse or Ovulation Induction.

Frequently asked questions.

IUI is suitable for women who have healthy fallopian tubes and a normal ovarian reserve. It can be used to treat a wide range of fertility issues:

  • Low sperm count or decreased motility
  • Ejaculation dysfunction
  • Unable to have penetrative sex
  • Hostile cervix or cervical scarring

IUI is also performed if you’re using donor sperm or your partner has previously frozen his sperm.

Although IUI is minimally invasive, there are a few risks you’ll be made aware of during your consultation with our experts. If fertility medication is used during your IUI treatment, there is an increased risk of multiple pregnancies. Furthermore, there is a small risk of developing ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) when the ovaries respond too well.

IUI is less invasive and less costly than other fertility treatments, but it does have a lower success rate than IVF. Other factors include the age of the woman, the reason for infertility and whether fertility medications are used.
