IUI encourages conception by selecting the highest quality sperm. The motile sperm is separated from the immotile through sperm preparation techniques in the laboratory. During the insemination stage, the sperm is placed into the top uterus where it can fertilise the eggs.
For some women, fertilisation can be further encouraged by using fertility drugs. Fertility drugs that stimulate the number of eggs produced can increase the chances of success. Ultrasound scans are then performed to monitor the development of the follicles and, at the right time, an injection of hCG-Human Chorionic Gonadotropin triggers ovulation.
IUI can be performed either alone or in conjunction with Timed Intercourse or Ovulation Induction.
